Houston Rockets vs Brooklyn Nets

The Houston Rockets (20-10) travel to the Barclays Center to take on Brooklyn Nets (10-20) at 6PM ET.

The Houston Rockets have rediscovered some form with three wins on the bounce after a run of four defeats in five games in Mid December. They sit 4th in the West and are among the favourites to challenge Oklahoma. With Kevin Durant, they have one of the league’s best scorers in terms of output and efficiency. Durant is averaging 25.5 PPG, on 52.2% FG & 43.7% 3pt percentage. Alperen Sengun has given real presence for the Rockets in the paint, averaging 9.4 Rebounds per game and a career high of 22.7 PPG. The Rockets are impressive across almost every metric. Ranking in the top five for Points, Rebounds, FG %, 3PT %, & Opposition points.

Despite sitting 13th in the Eastern Conference, Brooklyn have been in fine form. Since December they have a 7-4 record and have the best defensive rating. This has enabled Michael Porter Jr to score freely and dictate on the offensive end. Porter is averaging a career high 25.8 PPG and looks to be relishing the opportunity to lead a franchise rather than play the supporting role. However it was confirmed today that Porter will be unavailable due to illness. This massively limits their ability to compete and generate offence tonight.

Key Markets:

  • Houston Rockets ML (-600)/Brooklyn Nets ML (+380)
  • Houston Rockets -12.5 pts (-110)/Brooklyn Nets +12.5 pts (-110)
  • Over 217.5 pts (-110)/ Under 217.5 pts (-110)

Our Prediction:

Both teams rank in the bottom third of the league for pace. Brooklyn have the best defensive rating in the last 10 games and will need this to hang onto Houston tonight, who are 12.5 point favourites.

The injury reports will be the key point for all predictions on this match. With key players uncertain/ruled out on both sides, it would be unwise to start making betting selections. You would have to expect that Houston are better equipped to deal with any absences with Durant able to shoulder scoring load.

Miami Heat vs Detroit Pistons

Miami Heat (18-5) travel to Little Caesars Arena tonight to face off against the Detroit Pistons (25-8) at 7pm ET.

Miami have been on a heater offensively in recent weeks. They have won 3 consecutive games and average the most points in the last 5 games (126.2 PPG). Norman Powell has been integral in this 3 game stretch, scoring 73 pts (averaging 24.3 PPG). The concern for Miami is they are not particularly strong on the road, winning just six of sixteen matches.

After back to back defeats against the Utah Jazz and LA Clippers during a five game away stretch, the Detroit Pistons comfortably beat the LA Lakers 128-106 on Tuesday night. Detroit are the #1 seed in the East and are back at Little Caesars Arena, where they are 12-2 this season. Detroit have been strong defensively this season and they will back themselves to slow down this Miami side.

Betting Markets:

  • Miami Heat ML (+150)/Detroit Pistons ML (-200)
  • Miami Heat +4.5 pts (-110)/Detroit Pistons -4.5 pts (-110)
  • Over 236.5 pts (-110)/Under 236.5 pts (-110)

Our Prediction:

Detroit have been very strong at home and will be confident they can get the job done against Miami.

I don’t think Miami has the size or physicality to stay with Detroit across the full match.

Philadelphia 76ers vs Memphis Grizzlies

The Philadelphia 76ers (16-14) continue their 5 game road trip as they take on the Memphis Grizzlies (15-17) at the FedEx Forum 8pm ET.

The Sixers come into this after back to back defeats on the road against Oklahoma City Thunder & Chicago Bulls. They remain 2 games above a .500 record, but will be looking to stem the run of defeats. One of the metrics that needs improving for the Sixers is shooting efficiency. They rank 29th in the league for FG % at just 44.6%. Tyrese Maxey has averaged 30.7 PPG and been integral to the Sixers offence, but he also needs to improve shooting efficiency as he is at 46%. The Sixers have a positive record on the road this season; winning seven and losing six.

Memphis enter tonight after a defeat to Washington Wizards. They sit 9th in the West, a couple of wins below a .500 record. Scoring responsibilities have been shared across the team this season, with 8 players averaging double figure points. Jaren Jackson Jr the top scorer, averaging 18.5 PPG. The concern for Memphis tonight will be who keeps pace with Tyrese Maxey if he has one of those big scoring nights. It will need to be a team effort.

Key Betting Markets:

  • Philadelphia 76ers ML (-125)/Memphis Grizzlies ML (-105)
  • Philadelphia 76ers -1.5 pts (-110)/Memphis Grizzlies -1.5 pts (-110)
  • Over 235.5 pts (-110)/Under 235.5 pts (-110)

Our Prediction:

With the scoring power of Philadelphia and in particular Tyrese Maxey I am unsure whether Memphis can compete.

If this game enters the crunch time in the 4th quarter, I don’t believe Memphis have a player who can take control right now as Ja Morant remains rusty with just 16 games played this season.

Milwaukee Bucks vs Charlotte Hornets

The Milwaukee Bucks (13-19) travel to the Spectrum Center to face Charlotte Hornets (11-20) 7pm ET. The series is currently tied 1-1, with Milwaukee winning the last encounter at home by 147-134.

Both sides have uphill tasks to qualify for the playoffs this season.

Milwaukee look like a team that can only really perform if Giannis completely takes over. The Bucks struggled when Giannis was sidelined with a right calf injury, winning just two out of eight matches averaging 104.6 PPG. However his welcomed return on Saturday saw them overcome Chicago 112-103 at the United Center.

Charlotte are a team with some great young talent in the ranks. Kon Knueppel challenging for rookie of the year, averaging 19.3 PPG on an efficient 48% FG. Lamelo Ball has also shown glimpses of his talent this season when he has been fit enough to play, averaging 19.7 PPG & 8.5 Assists per game. However Charlotte are a very inconsistent side and haven’t managed to win 3 consecutive games all season. That is the challenge that awaits tonight.

The Matchup:

Milwaukee are 5-11 on the road so far this season, however they will be encouraged by their performance on Saturday against Chicago. They rank 3rd for 3pt % in the league, and this will be highly effective against a Charlotte team that struggles with their perimeter defence.

Charlotte are 7-8 at home this season, but are without rookie star Kon Knueppel. Charlotte will hope that Miles Bridges & Lamelo Ball can shoulder the scoring responsibility tonight.

Our Prediction:

This Milwaukee side is far from where it needs to be to compete in the playoffs.

But with Charlotte missing several players tonight, I’d expect Milwaukee to have enough to cover the spread if Giannis plays well and utilises his minutes.

Golden State Warriors vs Brooklyn Nets

The Golden State Warriors (16-16) travel to the Barclays Center to face the Brooklyn Nets (10-19) at 7:30pm ET.

This feels like a pivotal match for Steve Kerr’s side this season. After coming out in the media this week and describing the team as a “Fading Dynasty”, last night the Warriors blew a 7 point lead in the final ninety seconds against Toronto in catastrophic fashion. The Warriors looked in control for large parts of the match, but were unable to cope with aggressive double team pressing from Toronto in the clutch moments. This led to 20 turnovers and 35 Toronto points.

Perhaps a greater concern coming into this match tonight will be the condition of veteran trio Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler III, & Draymond Green. All of whom look set to play against Brooklyn after notching up over 112 minutes last night.

Brooklyn enter this matchup in great form. They are 7-3 in their last ten matches and hold the best defensive rating in this period. A couple of nights ago they dismantled Minnesota with a 123-107 victory on the road. Cam Thomas made an instant impact on his return scoring 30pts off 9-15 FG attempts. The key player for Brooklyn has been Michael Porter Jr this season. He is a player that knows what it takes to win having been a part of the triumphant Denver Nuggets side in 2023-24. Now stepping up as the main star in a struggling franchise, he is putting up All Star numbers averaging 25.7 PPG.

The Matchup:

Both teams have contrasting styles and it will be a question of which team disrupts the other better across the match. Brooklyn are one of the slowest teams in the NBA this season for pace, they are methodical and like to work into the paint and score. This will likely be an issue for Golden State, that are not a particularly big team and can struggle to stop paint points as proven last night in Toronto (70 paint points).

However Golden State Warriors top the charts in 3PM, averaging 15.8 per game. This can be disruptive for a young team such as Brooklyn and lead to uncharacteristic mistakes on the defensive end.

Our Prediction:

Overall we believe that Golden State’s experience will come through tonight and see them over the line against Brooklyn.

It will be a tale of two styles, with Golden State throwing up lots of shots from beyond the arc, whilst Brooklyn look to methodically work into the paint to score.
